Tear down these walls - Debbie Gibson

One and a half decade ago today, something significant took place.

But let's go back first even further.

Beginning August 12 1961, East Germans were not allowed to cross over to West Germany. To ensure that they dun, a wall is built and remained there for the next 28 years. East Germans were like foreigners who could not taste the benefits enjoyed by their western counterparts. After all, they are communist and their Western brothers aren’t.

Fast forward to the 9th of November 1989 – the walls came down! It was an unbelievable moment! I dun know if any of you can remember that day or not. I was not at Berlin on that day but I remembered that day.

No more walls of hostility. No more discrimination. No more “East” and “West”. The two have become one.

Yet, sadly, we continue to build walls. Walls are built to keep out those who are not of the same earning income as us, those who do not share the same doctrines, those who worship in different styles, those who dress differently, those who enjoy different things, those who look different.

The Berlin Walls may have come down but we need to tear down even bigger walls - the walls we build against each other. That's much harder to tear - cuz it starts wif us. Are we willing to?

Enough harsh blows, enough put-downs
We're all one and the same
You are all my brothers
Though I don't know you by name
With drastic measures needed
When ashes turn to tides
Will we stand up for each other?
Or stand on separate sides?
Won't somebody tell me why we hurt one another?
Tear down these walls
(Deborah Gibson)
