One moment in time - Whitney Houston
So far, there has not been that one defining moment in the World Cup. Not for me. Sure, it has been one of the best World Cups i've seen. It has had it's fair share of brilliant goals and fancy footwork. It has had blood and heart-breaking moments.
But none that truly lifted me up.
Sure, the Argentinian display the other day was excellent. It scored high on the aesthetic scale but did little comparably on the emotional side since me no big fan of them.
Gerrard's strike did evoke some sort of emotion - but that was purely the Red in me reacting.
But today, finally, a moment of pure brilliance that equalled the emotional experience! :-)
After battling hard, Japan gave away a penalty unnecessarily! The pub feel into an unusual silence as all of us Japanese fans dreaded the inevitable moment.
It will be an uphill climb for them - they have matched Croatia so far but still...
Some of the girls in the front row were oredi preparing themselves fo despair. Surely for all of Kawaguchi's skill, it would be hard to imagine him keeping the ball out of the net.
Then the moment came. It was a sweetly struck penalty - hard, low, on target.
But equally sweet was Kawaguchi's dive to his left - just like he expected it (the ball) to go that direction. With a strong hand, Kawaguchi pushed the ball away and out for a corner.
The whole bar erupted in deafening cheers (there weren't that many of us but it was loud - or maybe it was only me who was so loud? ;-P) and spontaneous applause!
What a moment!
Despair into joy. Sadness into happiness. Resignation into hope.
OK - i exaggerate, but not by much! ;-)
That was the moment so far!
Truth be told, i was a little concern after that save. In me opinion, the first goal conceded against Australia the other day came right after a brilliant save by Kawaguchi - and it was as a result of his mistake. A case of over-confidence?
But we neededn't be afraid cuz minutes after that brilliant save, Kawaguchi was humbled and almost embarrassed as an innocuous back pass suddenly bounced on the turf and away from his control, thankfully, rolling behind him and out of play for a corner! We all broke into relieved laughter!
It was truly an enjoyable match - and kudos to both set of players who ran themselves to the ground in the heat. No lack of excitement - only a lack of goals.
So Japan will now have to beat Brazil! Yeah, that was always part of the plan! ;-)
