Take a bow - Madonna
This time, there is no sarcasm intended in the title.
Well done, Li Na of China!
On the 28th June, 2006, she made history as one of the 2 Chinese girls who made it into the 3rd round of Wimbledon for the first time!
On the 30th June, 2006, she made history again by being the first and only Chinese girl who made it into the quarter finals of Wimbledon by beating the 12th seed Kuznetsova.
Today, she made it into our hearts as she almost caused an upset against Wimbledon no. 2, Clijster.
Li Na, the 27th seed, playing her first ever Wimbledon, had to face the second seed former world no. 1 Kim Clijster who was playing in her 7th Wimbledon. It had David vs Goliath written all over it - literally too as Li Na is a petite girl.
It appeared to be a rout when Li Na lost the first game 6-4 and was down 2-0 in the second. But she picked up her game and gave Clijster a scare when she took the next 5 games in a row!!!!
Unfortunately - due prolly to inexperience? - she went on to lose the next 5 games and lost the match.
Still, she made the tennis world sit up and notice China - and she made us proud!
I was privilleged to watch her play on the 29th last week in a doubles' match - and took a pic of her! Keep an eye out for her in future Grand Slams!
