Forbidden love - Madonna

It's Oscar fever now!!!!!

Last weekend, i watched 2 movies nominated for the Best Picture Oscar - Brokeback Mountain and Good Night, and Good Luck. I've oredi watched Munich a couple of weeks back and Crash last year. Only Capote is outstanding.

I now understand wat all the fuss for BM is all about. i must say that it is a pretty good movie - and it sure looks like it's gonna win tonite!

I think by now, we all know wat BM is all about - 2 gay cowboys! Right?

Nope. It's not that simple - it has 2 cowboys who get into a homosexual relationship but to say that BM is all about 2 gay cowboys is like saying that The Lord of the Rings is about 2 small hobbits!!!

Let's get one thing straight - it is not a movie which is meant to speak out in support of homosexuality. To me, it does not go into the rights and wrong of it. It is a movie about love. As one critic said, it could have been a movie about 2 women - or a man and woman who are prevented from a relationship due to the differences in their race - or religion.

Even then, some of you moral upright people will point out that there's still the element of violating the sanctity of marriage, of being unfaithful to your spouse.

Well, true. But does the movie actually promote it?

IMHO, it does not.

I have watched movies which have shown homosexual relationships and did not like them. But not BM. It just shows how these 2 people who are in love but can only be together in secret. It shows the struggle, the hurt.

The movie is oso about upbringing and acceptability.

It oso shows some really wonderful scenery.

Look, as a Christian, i find the Bible is very clear on homosexuality - NO! At the same time, the Bible is also very clear on how Christians should view those in such relationships - hate the sin but love the sinner.

I may not condone homosexuality nor adultery, but i do know that people do get entangled in it - and some struggle wif it.

BM is a wonderful movie about these struggles. It oso has some great acting - i hope Michelle Williams wins the Best Supporting Actress Award (yes, at the expense of Rachel Weisz). It is sad to read of Ms. Williams' old school disowning her because she acted in the movie.

While i do not condone nor agree with the lifestyle depicted in the movie, i do not find the movie glorifying nor promoting such things. BM just shows it as it is - and it shows it really well!

Having said that, if i had my way, the best movie Oscar should go to Good Night, And Good Luck! What a brilliant movie! Not a crowd pleaser, tho. Be warned.

It has a great storyline, a strong message, excellent acting (David Straithairn should win for best actor - but i dun think he will) and a wonderful cast. It is in black & white - and it's just soooooooo classy. Having it in B&W is a stroke of genius. The camera angles, the lighting, the smoke - all look so much better in B&W. On top of all that, it has some really cool jazz music! I must get the OST!!!!!

Here are some excellent quotes from th movie (sori, its a bit long but i have to share the whole thing!!!!):-

(On not being afraid to speak out) "We must not confuse descent from disloyalty. We must remember always, that accusation is not proof, and that conviction depends upon evidence and due process of law. We will not walk in fear, one of another, we will not be driven by fear into an age of unreason. If we dig deep into our history and our doctrine, we will remember we are not descendant from fearful men. Not from men who dared to write, to speak, to associate, and to defend causes that were for the moment unpopular. ... We can deny our heritage and our history but we cannot escape responsibility for the result. There is no way for a citizen of the republic to advocate his responsibilities. As a nation we have come into our full inheritance at a tender age. We proclaim ourselves as indeed we are, the defenders of freedom where ever it still exists in the world. But we cannot defend freedom abroad by deserting it at home."

(On the role of TV) "This instrument can teach, it can illuminate; yes, and it can even inspire. But it can do so only to the extent that humans are determined to use it to those ends. Otherwise it is merely wires and lights in a box. There is a great and perhaps decisive battle to be fought against ignorance, intolerance and indifference. This weapon of television could be useful."

This is a movie about not being afraid to speak out against wrong, of respecting the rights of others, of the freedom to be able to disagree and question things.

Sigh.... but the Oscars, being the crowd-pleasers as it always has been (Forest Gump? Shakespeare in Love? Titanic???), will not recognise quality over popularity. Still, if BM wins, you can't say it was the popular choice, rite?

In any event, kudos to Ang Lee and George Clooney for 2 brillaint movies!

Comments:
I saw only bits and pieces of BM, was not impress and the ending was weak. I think if BM had won, the same could be said about the Academy being not comfortable with racism. I think the fact that Ang Lee was overlooked for his previous work contributed to him winning the award for best director. About time someone gave Philip Seymour Hoffman an Oscar. Check this out: http://www.pplive.com/en/index.shtml. I'm sure this is very illegal. U can stream all sorts of stuff from TV series to Stephen Chow movies to latest cinema releases (that's how I saw part of BM, my labmate has PPLive on him comp).

but the main difference is that Crash depicts racism in a bad light - and it has a typical feel-good everything will end up alrite hollywood ending (oops - spoiler for those who din watch it).

BM - IMHO - did not take a stand on homosexuality.

and again, i have to disagree wif you about the ending. it was not weak. so powerful! the ability to come out wif such a strong ending wif very simple scenes and few words uttered is indeed a commendable feat!

so i was right after all about the osacars - popularity over quality! :-P

p/s - btw, why r u recommending illegal stuffs on me blog??? dun you know i'm all against that??? just like how i'm against stephen chow (whoever he is)...

p/p/s - i can just see the promo for the release of the special box-set for Legally Bonde and Legally Blonde 2. "Starring Academy Award Winner..."!!! Maybe now they'll come out wif LB 3!!!! But i doubt RW will have time for it. Maybe they can get Jessica Simpson... or Paris Hilton.
