Don't give up on us - David Soul

Some OCPDs (Officer-in-charge of Police District) lack knowledge on human rights!

Some police officers do not have copies of the relevant Acts (eg Human Rights Act, the Police Act, the Criminal Procedure Code and other related laws) needed for the job!

The ignorance of some police officers have resulted in human rights violations.

District police chiefs should quit if they could not grasp the concept of Human Rights!

The police have lately been perceived as lawbreakers due to the unwarranted actions of several officers who lacked understanding and did not supervise their men well!

Ho-hum.

*yawn*

Yeah, so what's new, you may ask me. We've heard you say things like these before. We have heard many other people raise similar points.

Well, to me, the big difference this time round is that the aforementioned statements were not made by an angry blogger or a frustrated human rights activist. Nor were they spoken over the mamak table or whispered along the Court corridors.

Those statements were made by none other than Tan Sri Mohd Bakri Omar, the Malaysian Inspector-General of Police!!!!

It seems that Tan Sri did not hold back nor mince his word when he publicly addressed 145 OCPDs in a three-day refresher course on human rights in the line of policing. Read about it in the local M'sian news here and in the UK news here.

Sure, some of you cynics will still be unmoved about it - and I can't blame you if you aren't. Could all this be bunkum? Mere words? We have had our hopes raised before only to have it spectacularly dashed into pieces.

The conspiracy theorists will say that this is all a show to deceive the citizens by making them (us?) think that the police will clean up their act!

Well, I am a dreamer. And I would like to be an optimist - at least for now! The first step to address any problem is to acknowlegde that it exists. An admission of the failings of the police force by the IGP himself seems to be a very good first step in the right direction. A small step - heck, a baby step - but nevertheless, it is a step. And we know that the journey ahead - albeit long and difficult - begins with but a single step.

I shall be waiting and watching... and hoping!
