Just a girl - No Doubt

I came back from work today to catch Maria Sharapova is sterling form as she swept the 2nd set of the semi-finals away from Amelie Mouresmo. Me neighbours must be wondering wat all the clapping and cheering and shouting from me room is all about - although i was nowhere near the levels of Maria's grunts!

Unfortunately, Maria couldn't keep it up in the 3rd set and she disappointingly bows out of Wimbledon 2006. Still, she earned me respect for going for all the hard shots and having nerves of steel!

Last week, i caught an interesting video on Maria. It was an interview with her in a pretty relaxed atmosphere at Wimbledon.

Why interesting? Well, first, she looked really good on it! She also talked of why Wimbledon is so special, how she still gets shivers when she walks on the grounds, how the players are pampered unlike at other Grand Slams - here, players even can choose to take a bath!

But wat struck me a lot about the interview was that it revealed a side of Maria rarely seen - the teenage girl! She talks of things that she loves to do - eating and sleeping! And having a good time wif her family and mates.

We forget that dun we? She is still so young - but we see a tennis champion instead. We dun remember that she is in fact, just a girl.

To watch the video, go here and click on the video entitled "Sharapova happy with life at Wimbledon".

But that's life isn't it? Like how we always see someone as the youth leader, the full time worker, the advisor - and we forget that he or she is still a human inside, wif needs and shortcomings. From my experience, i can truly say that sadly, the cliche that "it is lonely at the top" is true among Christians. The leaders are expected to encourage others, to be the pillar, to hold everyone together, to get things done. But who encourages the leader? Who acts as the pillar to them? Who gets things done for him? Sure, as the leader, he is supposed to get it all from God. Is he?

When was the last time you prayed for your leaders in your Church? When was the last time you said a word of encouragement to them? When was the last time you prayed wif them? When was the last time you offered to help them?

Of course, the illustration works the other way too - sometimes we see the kid so much that we dun realise that he has grown up - and has great potential for many things.

The thing i have to remind meself is to not be blinded by the cover but to see the person inside - after all, that's how God sees us.
